7/24/2023 0 Comments Terry de castro a view to a killThe Wedding Present's original, the opening track from 1991's Seamonsters, was produced by Steve Albini and is in equal parts taut, wiry, frenzied, vascular and rapacious. So it is no surprise that for her first solo effort de Castro remodels the majority of these songs with the wide-eyed innocence of Americana. The album opens with 'Dalliance' and is a case in point. Migrants traditionally suffer three dislocations loss of roots, linguistic and social. That de Castro should have chosen such a palette is not surprising, despite the fact that she has spent the best part of the last two decades dividing living between Britain and America. ![]() And the overall effect is unmistakeably American in its aspect. ![]() An obvious antecedent to A Casa Verde would be David Bowie's Pin Ups, a collection of songs by his late 60s contemporaries many of whom he had shared stages or played in studios with.De Castro refines the original material through her own aesthetic the sonic palette on each song is extended to include brushed drums, piano, banjo and steel guitar which augment the original framework. ![]() Released via frontman of The Wedding Present David Gedge's label Scopitones, it is an album that is irretrievably in thrall to its influences yet subtly reworks and reinvents the source material.Whether a vanity project or a way for an artist to recognise and pay dues to their influences collections of cover versions are an intriguing yet not always successful concept. The twelve songs contained on the record are all cover versions, each one originally written and performed by a friend or previous musical collaborator. The record features New Zealand guitarist Geoff Maddock (Goldenhorse), Shetland-born recording artist Astrid Williamson (Goya Dress) and Seattle-based producer / multi-instrumentalist, Paul Hiraga (Downpilot).A Casa Verde is the debut solo album from The Wedding Present's American bassist and confirmed Anglophile Terry de Castro. This new project features all original material by de Castro and British songwriter Dean Frances-Hawksley and offers up a diverse set of beautifully crafted Americana / pop.īacked up by eclectic guitar sounds, distorted violins, abstracted feedback, intricate banjo parts and evocative backing vocals, she wrangles her far-flung friends and former music colleagues. NME Journalist Nathaniel Cramp called de Castro’s 2009 debut LP, A Casa Verde, ‘a delight’ and gave it eight out of ten stars. Terry has been living in Los Angeles for the last 15 years, but her affiliation with David continues as he released her mini LP You Can't Separate Light - her second solo recording on Scopitones (August 2015). When she moved from the UK back to her native US, she continued to commute back and forth until 2010, when she played her final concert with The Wedding Present at the first annual At The Edge of the Sea Festival in Brighton. It was supposed to be for one concert and a Peel Session, but it turned into twelve years of touring and four albums with both Cinerama and The Wedding Present. Terry de Castro's long-time collaboration with David Gedge started in 1998 when she joined Cinerama shortly after its inception.
